Dayton Fire Department MMRS Internship

 This internship provides opportunities for students to gain knowledge and participate in governmental processes through work experiences in public safety:


The Dayton Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) Intern 

  • The student works for the Metropolitan Medical Response System (MMRS) program at the Dayton Fire Department. In many cases, the student will be able to also receive college credit for the internship, especially due to the hands-on nature of the experience.   
  • Dayton is one of 124 federally designated MMRS cities. MMRS assists hospitals, public health, and public safety agencies in ten west central Ohio counties prepare and respond to terrorist and other mass casualty incidents. The program was created in      1996 in response to the Tokyo Sarin gas attack and the terrorist bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Building in Oklahoma City.
  • Under direction, the student will prepare and revise plans and reports; develop policies and procedures; draft guidance material for response personnel; support the MMRS websites; and assist with contingency planning activities for terrorism, disasters, and other mass casualty incidents at the city and regional levels. The student will have      opportunities to work with area hospitals, public health agencies, and public safety agencies around the region to help the agencies prepare for and respond to large-scale incidents. 
  • Students will have the opportunity to interact with and observe experts in fields such as EMS, public health, law enforcement, medicine, and others. Interns will not be exposed to patients or other dangers.


ALL majors are considered for this internship. 


This internship start sin May 2026 and will conclude in May 2027, with onboarding starting on April 27, 2026. Interns are expected to work 15-20 hours per week during the school year and 35-40 hours per week during the summer.


Any full-time student enrolled at an institution of higher education is eligible to apply for this internship program. Applications accepted immediately but only for a limited time. The initial wave of applications will be reviewed on April 15.
